May Exhibitions open on the First Friday Art Walk, May 1,  5 pm – 8 pm.

First Friday Art Walk is a pleasant way to enjoy downtown Vincennes, especially during nice weather. The monthly event consists of a collaboration between four galleries downtown opening after hours to present shows by different artists. 20-30 businesses will display art lent by the galleries to show in their shop windows.  In May we have invited Daphne the Balloon Girl to bring her mobile balloon shop to Main Street for our First Friday Art Walk. We are also looking for other entertainers and vendors who might show their wares or put out a hat to keep the crowd interested and moving from gallery to gallery. We are looking for any fun and interesting action, especially if it relates to any of the arts.

Each gallery has its own flavor. Below is a description of each and information about what they are doing this month:

Art Space Vincennes LLC is established in a 200 year old house, the interior of which has been restored and equipped for exhibitions. The owners, Andrew Jendrzejewski and Amy DeLap, who each have studio space there, curate special exhibitions from successful professional contemporary artists.

In May ASV will feature Disturbances in the Field, Art by Sara Risley,  an artist from Milwaukee. Risley’s work will feature two separate media/styles:

1. Photo based digital images, created by manipulating the camera during exposure, then manipulating the digital image afterward

2. Acrylic paintings on canvas, which recall the Abstract Expressionism style of the period between 1945 – 1960.

A book by the same name will feature her work and will be for sale at the gallery.

Gallery 1 will continue to show Beyond Landscape, Carved and Painted Wood Reliefs by Andrew Jendrzejewski.  Barbara Edwards will return with her gourmet refreshments, while Jerry Edwards greets guests with his acoustic guitar.

The Open Gallery, owned by Mike and Rebecca Mullen, is described in these words on the gallery Facebook page:  “An eclectic, imaginative, and entirely modern hometown art gallery that features the hidden imaginations and talents of the quintessential artist flying under the ‘art scene’ radar housed in the history and tales of a historic downtown.”  In other words, cool, quirky and always interesting.

In May they will reprise the Life’s a Peach show, smart design work by Vincennes University Design students under the direction of Pravin Sevak.  The assignment was to create a poster that explains how certain foods are healthy and why. This was done based on the students’ research before each design was accomplished.  These designs are ingenious and beautiful.  Many of these students will graduate the next day, so the closing reception will be held for these design students to celebrate their accomplishments and their VU graduation.

Later during May, Open Gallery will be installing Jeremy Matick’s abstract paintings. A reception for that show will be held during June’s First Friday on June 5th.

Bartholomew's Studio
26 N. 1st St., 812.886.0165

Tom Bartholomew’s Wedding Photography is also like a big city raw artist space with a front gallery. Bartholomew features work by other photographers, as well as his own work. He has introduced an interesting fund-raising event creating noir portraits (think Hollywood style B&W photography and Raymond Chandler) and donating the proceeds to the Knox County Humane Society.

During May’s First Friday Art Walk, due to an overwhelming response in April, Bartholomew will again create Noir Portraits of First Friday visitors for $10.00, with all proceeds going to the Knox County Humane Society. Best to go early to avoid the crowd! Maybe you will be discovered!
