Sacred Spaces – the book – is here

Sacred Spaces Book Cover

Yes! The book Sacred Spaces – Paintings by Nancy Newman Rice has just arrived at Art Space Vincennes LLC, as part of our effort to bring another dimension of cultural enrichment to old Vincennes.  Two St. Louis art critics and our own Laurel Smith, as well as the artist, have contributed to the book to explain the ideas behind the St. Louis painter’s work.    The show comes  during the Lenten season and offers an artistic vehicle for us to celebrate Easter.

Why might one purchase this book?   It is beautiful!  Every painting illustrated is in full color.  The text provides one with insight into the painting that Ms. Rice has presented at ASV.  Her premise for the work is both intellectual and spiritual.  Her work is accessible on many levels. While one can recognize the subject matter, it is organized in an abstract way, through the layering of images, of  different times and of memories. Nineteen paintings that are examples of three separate series will be on display; one series named Ash Wednesday is based on T. S. Eliot’s poem, Ash Wednesday. Another series, Reflections, uses light reflections to evoke the notion of mental reflection.  Light and geometry are also devices, which provide other meanings in the Sacred Spaces  and the Ash Wednesday series.  There are multiple points of view expressed in the book that give the reader an opportunity  to grasp some of the deeper aspects of the work.

The exhibition Sacred Spaces opens Friday, April 4th, 2014, with a reception for the artist, at 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm with drinks and hors d oeuvres. The reception will coincide with the First Friday Gallery Walk on Main Street.

Also, preceding the exhibition on Thursday, October 3, at Shircliff Theater at Second and College Streets, there will be a slide lecture by the artist from 2:00 pm to 3:15, which will provide a more comprehensive background  for Nancy Newman Rice’s work.
